I found the noise redundant. Totally unnecessary. We are all aware of what Anakin did. That is why we are here seeing the third movie. Besides, Palpy just told us at point blank "Remember what you told me about your mother and the Sandpeople?" Uhh...yeah, we do. We get it. Hearing that noise is insulting. It's saying "You people are too stupid to know what we are talking about so here is a sound clip to jog your memory."

But it is interesting to learn that Anakin has told Palpatine. In that sense, the line is completely relevant and not at all redundant. The foley effect was probably done to remind people, yes, but it's not the double-whammy you're making out. Moreover, it's quite an effective way of layering Anakin's torment; one simple sound effect says as much as a facial expression and more than a thousand lines of dialogue ever could. Poor guy will be haunted by that sound forever.

The dialogue is fine. Palpy just said that to him, but I just don't like the noise and the word "sandpeople" in the same sentance. It would have been so much better if he had just said, "It wasn't the first time. Remember what you told me about your mother...? *sandpeople sound*" Now that would be good. When Palp mentions Anakin's mother in a situation like that of course he is not going to be thinking of the cake she once baked, he's gonna be thinking about the sandpeople.

THAT would have been good, yes!

The thing is, however, that Lucas probably hit upon the idea of a sound effect late into post-production - after the dialogue had been recorded.

I think the scene works very well as it is. Your subtle alteration, however, would have made it work all the more.

Maybe it was a Tusken held prisoner on the level bellow where Palpatine was kept... and it was screaming to get out...

Anyway, in all honestly It doesnt make in the least bit difference to me.

Do you also feel insulted when they use a recurring piece of music...

...like a hint of the love theme from AOTC when Padme is looking out the window of her ship on Mustafar?

You already know Padme loves Anakin, right? Is John Williams saying "You people are too stupid to understand she loves him, so here is a bit of the love theme to jog your memory."

LLS, i can't beleive you noticed that oops thing in the elevator shaft. i did too, and i thought of TPM. thats funny. um i don't mind the sound. i guess it would have been better if we just heard the sound without the statement of sandpeople, as mentioned by another poster.

I see it more as an auditory manifestation of the way the memory lingers, of how the event shaped the way things went, and all that other stuff. The memory still haunts Anakin.

I like the effect, although it looks/sounds weird in a Star Wars movie.

Very doubtful. Lucas will probably insert CG Tusken Raiders behind Palpatine before he takes that line out!

It seemed louder in theaters (like, balance-wise). It made my friend crack-up in the theater.

It was a good idea, but poorly executed.

My all time favorite comment on that scene:

I noticed the sound for the first time when I watched the movie on DVD last night. I saw the movie twice in the theater, but never heard it.

I liked it, but I do agree having the sound alone would have been more effective.

That works well enough, sounded a little bit like the ARC-170s, which of course sounded like TIE fighters, and of course the TIE fihter roar was origionally dervived from the Tuscan Yell or Vice Versa, so in an odd sort of way, it was a perfect fit, both as the roar of the engines, and as the yell of the Tuscan, perfect symmetry, if not a bit corney

I think stuff like the Tusken audio callback and the dream sequences are a way of showing that this movie has a different tempo than other Star Wars. When else do you have a callback in the form of a sound? Or a visualized dream sequence? It signifies a crucial turning point for our protagonist.

    I thought it was good.
It was intesting to know that he had told Palpatine.

When Yoda told Obi-Wan that some of the padawans in the had been killed by a lightsaber in the temple, Obi-Wan replies "well WHO, who could have done this".

Yoda already knew who had done it.

So I wonder if through his force meditations, he knew about Anakins tusken slaughter? (before ROTS took place)

I actually liked your way of doing that scene better, no doubts there. BUT to say the idea was poorly executed has to be one of the biggest exaggerations as well. I'll just say your idea was better, but I wouldn't dare call it poorly executed.

    You guys suck!

The tusken yell is perfectly executed and appropriate. These sounds have been in starwars since ESB. Just after Luke says "I'm cold" and Yoda says "that place" you can hear the word "Death" coming from the force. How could you forget? Or perhaps you didn't know. It's there and always has been. I also like how Palps refers to the tuskens as "sand people" this sets it up for the next film where the name tusken raiders are never mentioned.

    Eat that!

I always took it as Anakin is still thinking about what he had done to the Sandpeople. When Palpy mentions them, it takes Anakin back to that horrid night when his mother died and Anakin went slaughtering all the Tusken Raiders in that village.

It wasn't George Lucas saying: "You people are too stupid to know what Sandpeople are, so here's a audio clip to jog your memory!" It was Anakin thinking about what he had done to the Sandpeople.

Yeah, exactly.I actually never even noticed this and I saw it 10 times in the theater [face_blush] I'll have to listen extra carefully the next time I watch the DVD.I also don't understand why this is such a bad thing to some people. It sounds like a nice subtle way to remind us how much it still bothers Anakin....I like it :)
