But that surely IS the point of joining up to the Armed Forces in the first place... to fight any wars that may happen, it doesn't make them suckers imho they are just dedicated individuals hoping that they might be able to make a difference... no matter how much I disagree with Governments using them as pawns in a deadly game of chess...

Yes, it is the point, but you'd be surprised at how many people join the army not expecting to actually see action beyond basic peacekeeping duties.

A lot of the youngsters join up expecting to get good career training and to see the world as portrayed on the adverts.

I guess I've had experience of this when two of my friends considered the services as a good career. Even I nearly join the QAs but I was way too fat for them. My ex-boyfriend joined, as did my best mate, both signing on for longhaul. My ex ended up serving 5 years in prison for desertion cos he didn't wanna fight in the Gulf. My mate left as soon as her contract finished and now works as a nurse in the US.

I've never really spoken to anyone in the armed forces for a prolonged time so I've never really gotten a look into the mindset of these people but I now have a mate who is a Royal Marine (who is injured so not in the Gulf at the present) and I have to say it's a completely different train of thought and justification to them.

I could and would NEVER join the Armed Forces as I really object to Governments fighting and then sitting on their asses sending other peoples children, mothers, fathers etc off to fight for them, that disgusts me to the max! [face_plain]

It's way too easy for politicians to fight wars in other people's countries. I think that is what disgusts me the most.

It was bad enough with the cold war and I'd hoped never too see this kind of thing again.

Indeed I think it's the bad case of keeping your eye on the horizon and missing what's under your feet kinda mentality they seem to have annoys me the most!

Aye, indeed. One can only hope that this madness does not keep rolling along.

John Lennon had it right when he wrote Imagine.

I hope this war comes to a very swift end and with as little loss of life as possible!

One aspect of the campaign I find troubling is that they are reportedly planting US flags to mark captured territory. I understand the necessity of this from a tactical point of view, it provides a clear reference to whom is in control of the land. But I do wonder how the liberated Iraqi citizens will feel about such a symbol being displayed on their soil?

alot better than charis and uks's daft and silly reason for calling them 'suckers'- which they CERTAINLY arent. you wouldnt be calling them 'suckers' if they were here or somewhere fighting to protect your sorry asses.

No. Wrong. Sorry. Your misunderstanding is confusing when Charis said herself that she was mocking people who chose the very moment of maximum danger to join up, when they can wait and be completely safe. I am not sure why I have been dragged into your little skirmish about this as I was merely clarifying Charis position, but whilst I accept the military as a very valid life choice etc etc blah blah, I'd say you would be a fool to take at face value any of the pro-war nationalism that turns up on TV and the papers when we are in conflict with someone, and then dive off into risking your own life.

Look what happened in the First World War. Thousands of friends volunteered and served together, right until the moment when they were massacred by german machine guns going over the top.

Uh huh. I say wait until you have a fair chance of not having to die in the desert. For the other guys who are already out there and in the army, all I can say is good luck.

alot better than charis and uks's daft and silly reason for calling them 'suckers'- which they CERTAINLY arent. you wouldnt be calling them 'suckers' if they were here or somewhere fighting to protect your sorry asses.

if this was an actual threat to us I'm sure we'd all be here protecting our soverign state.

BTW, Dusty, who were you before the sock?

"if this was an actual threat to us I'm sure we'd all be here protecting our soverign state."

yeah i'd believe that when i see it.

when you get down off your high horse you will see AT NO TIME is it right to call people joining up to the army as 'suckers'- what if they want to fight in a case they believe in.

    "wait and be completely safe"

sounds like the coward you are. you may see them as 'suckers' but then that says alot for you both

OK, you win. I'll apologise for all the times I called UK Soldiers, suckers.

Oh wait, no. I never said that did I?

Ok, I'll apologise for calling anyone "suckers".

No, I never said that either.

So, basically, your lying when you inferred that I said that.

I'll try and clarify one last time, in nice simple terms for you to understand. Is that ok?

    1. Charis says that "Were there any suckers actually looking interested in joining up? I mean, joining the army doesn't seem like a good career move right now."

    2. You take offence to the term "Suckers"

    3. Charis tries to get you back on topic.

    4. You ask for the reason why Charis called them suckers.

    5. I Supply what I believe to be the reason for Charis's remarks.

    6. Charis confirms.

    7. You then start making silly statements about our "daft and silly" statements and how we should be grateful for the protection of our "sorry asses". Even though you seem completely oblivious to the fact that no one mentioned UK Soldiers, merely the people possibly trying to sign up now after seeing all the action.

    8. I then try and clarify again.

    9. You then call us cowards and to "get off our high horse".

    10. I give up.

    11. You take that as victory

    12. I type this and post it.

13 and onwards: I ignore you.

    "

yeah you stuck your foot in it.

"9. You then call us cowards and to "get off our high horse".

    no just you.

victory? what victory? if you are bringing this down as to who gets one over who then i think you need to grow up.

oh i forgot your going to ignore me too.

i will reply to anything here or on other threads you might reply to that i might agree or disagree with. i aint going to lower myself and start ignoring people because i dont agree with them. there are better things to do than fall out with people thats not even real life. its just a message board.
