Backstory: When I was younger (like 12 or 13), I read the junior novelization of The Force Awakens before I watched the actual movie, for complicated reasons that would take too long to explain. Even before I read that, I knew most of what happened in the movie anyways from visual dictionaries and talking to people, etc. So by the time I actually watched the Force Awakens, Han's death wasn't too emotional for me because I'd already experienced the shock and sadness of it from other sources. But when I tell you that I cried when I first read that novelization, I mean I really, really cried. So unconventional as it was, that was the saddest death for me.

Kuiil's death really gets to me. He willingly -- and with much reluctance -- surrenders the peace and freedom of his old age to protect a child from the same regime that once enslaved him, and ultimately dies by its hand just feet away from safety. And absolutely nothing he owns or creates survives him, save for whatever of his is rusting back on Arvala-7.

The scene of the Ewok dying in ROTJ, and his friend grieving, has always touched a nerve with me. It's moments like that (such as the Rancor's owner weeping over its death) that make SW feel "lived in" and real.

Like others, I was also going to mention Luke's death in TLJ. But I'm not sure "sad" fully conveys how I feel about that. More like: frustrating, pathetic, are-you-kidding me; I can't believe I waited 30+ years for this. You get the idea.

Oh, man, the rancor trainer always makes me super sad. Like, I feel weird about it, but pet grief hits hard.

I've found all the major character deaths sad for obhious reasons, but i've always found the death of fives the saddest.

The scene were the shock troopers take off the helmets really puts the cherry on top of this sad,sad cake.

I would immediately respond Han Solo here, but Vader's death is indeed still very sad. So is Anakin's 'death' in III.

Han Solo dying at the hands of his son in TFA

(So seeing him return in almost the same situation and dialog in TROS was another strong emotional event, but this time to redeem Ben Solo and turn him back to the light!)

Can't believe I'm having so much trouble coming up with examples of tragic deaths in SW. But I think in the end I'll go with the Ewok in ROTJ...followed by Anakin Solo...Qui-Gon...and Jango Fett.

Besides the obvious ones like Darth Vader and Han Solo, Kanan Jarrus from Rebels always gets me.

Good question i don't know considering force heal can now bring back anyone from the dead it seems. As Jake Skywalker said no ones ever really gone.
