What are the Royal Guards really for? (could they ever "protect" the Emperor?)

I think that we have convened that they are there to conceal Palpatine's identity, assuming that nobody other than Darth Vader and his advisors know of it.

darkscout I was thinking the same thing, they are more ceremonial than anything, I mean look at the beefeaters in the UK, and of course the Swiss guard as you so rightly said, spot on.

I know that I'm kind of re-posting the same reply here, but in the book Labyrinth of Evil, the guards really prove themselves. They form a ring around the chancellor and protect him from Grievous, his bodyguards, and assist Shaak Ti, Adi Galia, and Mace Windu & Kit Phisto. The book is only so-so but the final chapters are all about Palpatine, and his guards are truly amazing.

Yay! I think we were mainly disagreeing in the other thread, but you know, that's the sign of a good debate. I'm all for that on here.

    Thank you Commander *bows*

I think we'll never know the Royal guards true purpose, what a pity! Doesn't the visual dictionary have an entry or something...?

They look really cool, that's why the Emperor uses them. He likes looking at them, just like we do. Their his favorite eye candy.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the deleted scene in ROTJ where Vader has to force choke the Royal Guards to get into see Palpatine in the throne room on the DS II. This is followed by the scene in which the annoyed Emperor tells Vader, "I thought I told you to remain on the command ship." So, diminished Vader had a hard time defeating the Royal Guards compared to Yoda who barely had to flick his fingers. One can assume by this that they are quite powerful by the time of ROTJ, and likely not the same individuals present in ROTS. Only Yoda, with his skill, can defeat them so easily.

In the deleted scene your referring to Vader "subdues" the royal gaurds through a force choke. Just his little way of letting them know to get the **** out of his way, on route to the Emperor. Had he wanted to, he could have killed them just as easily as Yoda. So this scene really proves nothing in the way of the Royal Guards becoming stronger in between Sith and Jedi.

The Royal Guard are used in the Emperor's life size chess game on Coruscant.

It's good to be the Emperor. :D

The scene doesn't mean anything that we don't already know:
    Yoda vs. Royal Guards
    Winner: Yoda

The bottom line with the royal guards in the GFFA is, their dangerous against non-forec users, but benign against Jedi/Sith.

In the post-Jedi says of the Empire I'd estimate that the royal guard are formidable combatants.

Since Palps is a sith lord he doesn't need much protection from anyone, unless he is in a public place, and then he lets his guards have their fun.

Because the public doesn't know that Palpatine is a Sith. If he were to get attacked in public, he couldn't use his saber or lightning.

I've always wanted to see that deleted scene with Vader choking the guards, but I suppose Lucas thought it was a bit late in the game to have Vader still doing such nasty things. I agree with the posts that say that the Red Guards are like beefeaters or Swiss Guards. Who knows? Maybe it's some kind of Sith symbolism. Regardless, the Red Guards, to me, have always been sweet; I love their bright red contrasting the white and grey in the Death Star II hangar when they're getting off the Emperor's shuttle.

Does anyone who played TIE Fighter remember the mission when Palpatine gets captured by Admiral Zaarin? They managed to get him on board an assault shuttle and Vader personally joined your TIE squadron to rescue him. I guess the red guard weren't all that useful against a few stormtroopers.

The ROTJ novelization describes the red guards coming out of the shuttle as being like fire coming out of a dragon's mouth. And the ROTS novel has lots of dragon imagery.

I do believe that the Royal Guards are very powerful against non-foce users. I have no problem with Yoda taking them out so easily. He's one of the top Jedi, so it's understandable. But I just wish there had been a small part in ROTS with the guards actually doing something where they showed off their skill. Maybe it could have been where some punk tried to kill Palps when he went to the opera, and the Royal Guards take the assailant out in a flash. It just doesn't seem fair to me that that's their only fight scene. It makes them look like wusses to everyone which they are not.
