What happened to Vader's lightaber?

    This is the lightsaber that Vader supposedly has in Episode III, although I never saw it.

    This is his lightsaber in Episode IV, obviously a different one. So what happened to his old lightsaber? Is this explained in James Luceno's "Dark Lord?"

    Well, I thought the one Obi-Wan picked up at the end of the duel on Mustafar was the same one he gave Luke in A New Hope but perhaps Anakin had a different one that Obi-Wan got ahold of and gave to him instead. Or perhaps Lucas overlook another detail...

    It looks like it was modified a little? Maybe Vader changed it.

    At different stages in Jedis' and Siths' lives they make new lightsabers and retire their old ones.
