What sport requires the smartest athletes?

I'd say fencing or Kendo.

 

I'd say golf, but when I was in England I got addicted to Snooker, and that's definitely a thinking man's game. But with gold you have to concentrate for 5 hours at a time, so I think it wins the tie.

 

This thread seems to be taking great liberties with the terms "sports" and "athletes." But if that's the way it's gonna be, then the answer is clearly miniature golf. Einstein couldn't get past that damn windmill.

If Rooney had never played a game of football in his life up until today and you magically gave him all his technical ability with a football (i.e. kicking accurately, control, and the like) and his fitness, and then put him in a game he would have no vision because he never worked at it. It never would have developed. Just as a writer, artist, performer, mathematician works at their craft in order to excel, so do sportsmen.

Draw, fade, spin, roll, wind judgement, distance judgement, stance, club selection; all must come together to land a ball 5cm in diameter within a metre of a hole 8cm in diameter from 150 metres out.
