Rogue One What was your reaction the first time seeing the Vader hallway scene?

I remember the theater getting very quiet. The screen stayed dark for an unusually long span. I sputtered an expletive as I realized they were setting it up to be like a scene out of a horror flick, which is pretty much what they did.

 

The Vader scenes were the highlight of RO for me. And the end hallway scene, along with seeing him for the first time, were fantastic. I clapped.

 

I loved the scene, but wasn’t clapping for Vader. Was clapping for the extraordinary heroism of the Rebels in the face of inexorable horror and death.

 

I was concentrating on the Mcguffin.

 

Just rewatched RO on TBS last night (at least the last hour or so of it). The Vader scene to me has always been just the bonus material at the end. The climax has always been the DS firing on Scariff.

 

I had been expecting Vader to be the one to kill most of the protagonists.

Still wasn't exactly disappointed though.

 

The scene is a perfect transition from the gritty war world of RO to the mythic legendary world of the OT.

 

Vader: "Feeling alright Sir?"
Tarkin "Just like new Vader, how about you?"
Vader "Right now I feel like I could take on the whole Rebellion myself"
Tarkin "Funny you should mention that"

 

Yup. Not even the brilliant strategist and tactician Admiral Raddus can handle this demon with a burning sword. We need a Jedi.

Or...a farm boy.

 

My first reaction was : better than any Vader fight scene before.

 

For a second, towards the end of it, I asked myself the question: Is this the best thing I’ve ever witnessed in a cinema?

 

Although I think it was nicely working in the gaps we hadn't seen from Vader previously, the same kind of LS style as Empire and Jedi but force abilities used against non force users.

 

Holy moly.

 

I actually didn't really like the scene. Seems like it cheapens Vader when we have him slaughtering a bunch of helpless redshirts. I liked it better in the OT when he brought out his lightsaber only for Obi-Wan and Luke.

 

^The way I see it, Vader had a job to do, and using his saber and Force powers to take down the Rebels was just more efficient. It doubt it would've been as fast if he'd trusted stormtroopers to do it.

 

Well, the scene could've just been written to have the stormtroopers charging out ahead of Vader. And besides, Vader didn't exactly charge into battle with all available haste...he was standing there in the dark for a good moment doing the Alien thing.

 

It was all part of the image. Lucas wasn't one to shy away from giving Vader a big entrance scene (see first 10 min of ANH); so it's no surprise his successor in the director's chair continued that format. The dramatic entrance adds to the eye-candy of the scene as a whole.

 

Yeah, but the hallway scene isn't about showing how logical or heedful Vader is. He's obviously not expecting to lose. The 'waiting in the dark' thing kinda serves that, and is pretty in-character for him.

Plus, the hallway scene was something we hadn't seen in the films before. Rebels vs. stormtroopers... nothing really special about that.

 

It’s objectively a great scene. Any other opinion is wrong and should be punished.
