The stance that Obi-wan takes right before fighting the Magnaguards and then Grievous, is an actual sword stance. Very common in Chinese and Hong Kong film martial arts films. It's a variation of a Japanese stance, except what Ewan did was all about fluid movements. The Japanese/Bushido version doesn't require the flashy movements, the fighter just goes into it. Arnold Schwarzenegger(sp), Uma Thurman, Christopher Lambert, Adrian Paul and Valentine Pelka have done that. If you watch "Empire Of Dreams", Peter Diamond demonstrated it when he was talking about working out the moves for the Lightsaber duels.

Ewan holding the two fingers up with his left hand, is common of the Chinese style. In Japan, it's with your left palm open with all five fingers open. Or it's holding onto the pommel of the sword.

As to Obi-wan's fighting style, it's more confident now. He's combined his work on Form III with his older work on Form IV.

I thought Obi was stretching his arm before the fight.. "Ungh..Here we go again..*krack snap* "
I mean he has been fighting in the clone wars for a long time so Im sure his muscles need some loosening up before the fight. ;)

Obi-Wan's poses were awesome. The entire character as played by Ewan was awesome. And the two-fingered salute is marvellous. Don't forget that Obi-Wan was using this as a distraction so that he could get Grievous' attention and then pick up Grievous and slam him into ceiling.

It's a stance you see in Tai Chi, as well.

I don't mind the slowness of the ANH duel, just how relaxed the two combatants are. I wish Lucas had conveyed to them exactly what happened in the past, and that Vader should be blinded with rage and fury, fighting with precision but also anger. Like the Vader we see at Bespin, after Luke lands that glancing blow. Obi-Wan was OK, because I think he would be more sad about what Vader has become, and that he knows that he will die there, but Vader should have been UNLEASHED!

What was with Mcdiarmid's wierd faces and strange noises he made while he fighting? Surely I wasn't the only one who noticed it.

You're not the only one. I thought they were cheesy and over the top. Some posters here say that was the entire point of the shots...to be over the top. The cheesiness of the shots didn't bother me that much until the worst scene in the film..."No! No! No! You will die! Unlimited---blarharhghafh!" Worst.scene.in.the.film if you ask me. ;)

Perhaps if George had the story penned in 76, he might of been able to give them better direction?

Agreed. Not his fault, who could have known that Star Wars would be the coolest thing ever, and that he would have to make Episode 3 in 25 years, with unlimited visual effects capabilities? But still, a little aggression would have been nice.

No matter what thread I go into, someone is complaining about Ian's performance. Can't we just funnel the hate all into one thread?

I loved Palpatine's "hissing" faces! Maul bears his teeth, Tyranus taunts and raises an eyebrow in amusement, Vader cuts everything around him, and Sidious just hisses like an evil little snake. Brilliant!

You know, a little cgi here, a little re-shooting there, and old man Kenobi could still pull that stance on the Death Star [face_mischief]

I get the feeling sometimes that people (non-fanatical fans) kept coming back to see the movie just to laugh at the over-dramatical performances... not that that's a necessarily bad thing, mind you.

There just always seems to be someone cracking up in the movie theatre whenever Ian or Ewan does an over-the-top perforamnce.

I agree. Vader is way too calm. That always struck me as a bit off, even before ROTS. Now, it seems REALLY off. They could have at least redone his dialogue, put more anger behind his words. It's true that Vader always seems a lot more mature and controled than Anakin ever does but I really can't imagin him going into that particular fight without his circuits firing all over the place. If ever there was a situation where you'd expect him to really lose it it's definately that one.

    Vader should have been UNLEASHED!

    XXX 3- Vader Unleashed!

Laughable. You guys want Michael Bay directing this thing or what?

    VADER UNLEASED!=P~

That would be so rad! Clearly, the last ten minutes of film should have had a montage of Suited Vader killing Jedi, set to either "Eye of the Tiger" or "Danger Zone." That would have roxxed!

    That would be excellent, Commander!

I would also accept "YOU'RE THE BEST" from the end of Karate Kid, or anything by Journey.
