Behold, one of the greatest lines of cinematic history delivered by a puppet. What, judge him by his inanimate nature do you?

It was great wasn't it? If this were done in the prequel fashion, Luke would have landed safely on Dagobah, then Yoda would have approached him in stoic Jedi fashion, and they would have proceeded to tell each other all of the necessary plot information.

Instead, the brilliant people working on the original films (including the writers) thought outside the box about ways they could add dimensions and depth to the scene. Finally someone came up with the idea to have Yoda pretend to be a simple creature in order to test Luke's patience. Screenwriting and filmmaking at its finest.

I second all of the great moments mentioned here but I didn't see this one, so I will add it.

Moment: Yoda trolling Luke/testing his patience by not revealing his identity right away. That and him riding on Luke's back.

Line: "You will know [the good side from the bad] when you are calm, at peace."

I want to be very predictable and say "do or do not, there is no try." But, pretty much all of the Dagobah training scenes are flawless.

"You must unlearn what you have learned."
    "Size matters not."
"What's in there?" "Only what you bring in with you."
"I can't believe it." "And this is why you fail."

Some of the best SW writing, mechanical hands down.

Agree with most here that all the Dagobah training scenes are great. For all-time faves, gotta go with the "luminous beings are we" lines and the raising of the x-wing.

Perhaps Luke's X-Wing would still get stuck, but then video game/CGI/cartoon Yoda would leap around hacking his light saber at the swamp until the ship was free.

Obviously his Force moments and dramatic dialogue.

But the way Yoda hits R2 with his stick always cracks me up.

Don't remember the exact quote, but when Yoda is refering to Anakin's wreckless behavior.

If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will, as it did Obi-Wan's apprentice.

He talks about Anakin's anger, and Obi-Wan's, recklessness, but not Anakin's.

"Much anger in him, like his father."
"Was I any different when you taught me?"
    "No. He is not ready"

    "You are reckless!"
"So was I, if you'll remember."

Nice but I was thinking of the "where he was!!! What he was doing!!!" Line where he was waving his cane at Luke.

That would be Luke's recklessness, and lack of serious mind.

This one, a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away, to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was, hmm? What he was doing! Adventure! Ha! Excitement! Ha! A Jedi craves not these things!

The whole x-wing scene, including the "luminous beings" speech, is what Star Wars is all about - honestly, that's the ethos of these films in one scene. A tiny man, through the power of pure self-belief, goodness, and the mystical Force, can make miracles happen. Add that to the fact that it's scored by the magnificent "Yoda and the Force" (seriously, why the hell did John not get an Oscar for ESB?) - and you have one of the most perfect Star Wars scenes there is. It made such an impression on me as a child and it always gives me tingles even now. The fact that they used that music for the TFA trailer was absolute genius, by the way - if you're looking to make people feel the way they did for the OT, make them remember that scene!

And of course, *that* is why spinny-acrobatic-lightsaber Yoda is so utterly wrong. It betrays everything that scene is saying. Not trying to bash the PT here but I think it's an important point that isn't made often enough.

So yeah, that's my favourite Yoda bit by far. I also love the flashlight fight though, especially the little shocked noise - "MMMM!" - when Artoo first grabs it. I find it even funnier when I think that perhaps that wasn't part of the act and Yoda was genuinely angry at Artoo for snatching it! That's my headcanon anyway.

X Wing moment (he's so cute meditating. He reminded me of one of my cats when I pet her under her chin.)

When Luke says "I don't believe it" and Yoda responds "That is why you fail."

I also liked when he was giving R2 what for with his cane. "Mine! Mine!"

True, but keep in mind he probably comes to this realization during his years on Dagobah. Hence his comment to Luke, "Wars don't make one great."

Generally speaking, the Jedi were against war all throughout the PT. It was pretty much thrust upon them to take part in it,so there really isn't anything contradictory.

It's too tough to pick just one, but I'd say my favorite was "A Jedi must have the deepest commitment....Adventure-Heh! And Excitement-Heh! A Jedi craves not these things!"
On a personal level that connected with me as a kid,as I also aspired to be disciplined in my spiritual life.

The Prequels had a heavy focus on the failures of the Jedi though. To me, it's Yoda learning from his failures and I think it works very well.

My favorite Yoda moment in TESB is when he lifts the X-wing out of the swamp. My second favorite is when he's warning Luke about the cave. He's very stern and unforgiving in some ways. He warns Luke about the dangers of the dark side, why he doesn't always require weapons, and what it is necessary to take with one (or feel) in certain situations. He's a great Jedi Master. Definitely one of my favorite characters.
