Why are Smurfs blue? An in-depth discussion

In the spirit of the in depth discussions presented in the Saga forum, I present to you the ultimate intellectual discussion. Why are smurfs blue? Is it the iron in their blood? Are their caps pressuring their brains too much? Are they choked every night by a skulking Papa Smurf?

And while we are in the subject, how on earth do smurfs reproduce??? 100 guys and just one woman in sight????

Clearly this is a just a question of evolution. Somewhere in the smurfs' distance past, one of their ancestors had a run-in with a blue alien sent to their land on an expedition for mushrooms. Their descendants have been blue ever since.

I am not touching that reproduction question, though, way too complicated.

I think the Smurfs are just Nac Mac Feegle in disguise. Any self repecting Pratchett fan knows who the Feegle are. And they are blue from the tatoos.
