Jane pushed the USB out and quickly let it slide into her boot. "Yes!" She hissed and quickly passed the desk and threw herself on the couch, trying to take a pose there that looked as if she had been sitting her awhile checking her mobile.

She had the harddrive now. Her last obstacle to quote a triumphant real world hack would be to survive the coming conversation and get out to Analyse what she had. Data. Maybe she had now enough data to actually make a leap forward.

    Abelard Lindsay
    Kingslayer, Bureau

Abelard opened the door and walked in, not giving the guests a look until he sat at his desk and leaned back putting his legs up and folding his hands behind his head. Scott was with him. So was one of his security which was none of those who had escorted them earlier. It was his personal bodyguard, the American.

"Hello friends." He smiled at Jane and Michael and then looked at Scott. He had left them in here alone? Scott got sloppy. They would need to check the room for bugs and bombs now. When he saw Michael he put his feet down and leaned forward gesturing at Michael.

"Oh Scott, are you blind?" He asked and laughed. Then he got up and walked around the desk, pointing at Michael. "That is Michael! Claire's brother! She showed us pictures of him! Remember? The Ex-Military with the stick up his ..." He laughed. "Anyway, your sister had a dirty mouth. How is she? Left us so quickly!" Abelard saw Scott's embarrassment. "Now you got me confused. Scott said this was about my daughter-in-law."

Abelard Lindsay folded his arms and in his head he tried to go through any scenario that might endanger his plan. His eyes went to Jane. Who was she?

"So what are you two? Journalists? Private Eyes? Certainly you are no cops." He smiled and the thought of what to do with them passed his mind. Why did he not know who they were? These kind of surprise players usually ruined your game. He could not allow anyone to ruin his plan. Any good plan needed improvisational elements too. So maybe he could turn them into an advantage, maybe he could use them. After all they were here for Laura and Claire and both women had a certain meaning in the days to come.

A dangerous game for all three of them. No, for all four of them. He still held the advantage though.

Jane looked quite pleased with herself taking a seat on the couch. One hurdle had been crossed, though they both knew that now they had to get out with what they had. He moved briskly from the door taking a seat next to Jane. There wasn't really time to go over a strategy, to discuss plans and fall backs. They were both making it up as they went along.

"Not how I saw my night going." He gave her a smile, "Going from my mate's flat to the office of some bigshot club owner...quite the upgrade in company."

The man of the hour entered making a very grand entrance. Flanked by Scott, and a man that clearly looked like security. Again the numbers were not in their favor, nor was the landscape. The former soldier couldn't help the wince as Lindsay made mention of Claire's feelings on her older brother. Their relationship had not always been the best and the few times Michael was home there was tension. That didn't matter all that did was bringing her home.

Gritting his teeth he looked to Jane, not sure how to respond. He didn't trust Scott, and he didn't trust this Lindsay. It was hard to tell if this was an act or if this was genuine. Something in his stomach did feel right.

He left the question hanging, himself not exactly sure what they were other than looking for answers that this man was the gateway to. If Lindsay was involved or responsible for Claire's disappearance. It wouldn't do to just blurt out his plan to find her or kill those responsible. He wasn't the best at coming up with plans though if he was given one. He could execute it. For that he looked to Jane, it was her idea to come up here, surely she had a plan or getting out.

Jane swallowed. Abelard Lindsay. Murderer, Crime Boss and if Laura was right a complete psychopath. Her dead friend had talked little about him, but she had called him that once laughing. The man was not that much older than Laura herself probably. "Friends. We were friends of her and just wanted to ... understand what was going on."

They knew who Michael was and that was bad in many ways. Abelard Lindsay was a different kind of dangerous. Michael was probably more than capable to handle himself, but a lion was nothing in a pool with a white shark. Lindsay was the worst among the worst and she did not fall for his act as a cute young rich guy running a club. She knew his reputation and he probably knew hers. He just did not know her face or name. So he did not know who he was dealing with. An advantage she needed to use.

Nevertheless the talk turning to Claire McKay was good. The less they talked about Laura the better.

"We had no idea you knew Claire? Really? Mike and me have been a topic for a few years now. Is Claire around? I would love it to finally meet some family ... after three months I am pretty sure he has not even told his parents I do even exist." She laughed and gave Michael a push with her elbow, to fake intimacy. They were both probably not the greatest actors on the planet.

Michael put a smile on his face taking the push with the elbow in good humor, or trying to fake it. They were friends of one dead woman trying to figure out what was going on. Though the hard change to Claire left him something to play off of. Swallowing his reservations and trying to play along he put an arm around Jane, not tightly but at least some sign that they were an item, or at least good friends, though he was worried about going too far.

"It's been a while since I've seen my sis. Be great to see her again. You say she left, you know where?" He said trying to seem as if he hadn't come down here with sole purpose of finding her. Playing innocent.

Jane felt he was increasingly threatening in his ways. He knew something she did not see. Played a game she did not yet understand.

Damian Ashcroft? London's first bachelor? Was Abelard lying and sending them on a wild goose chase or was this a serious nudge into the right direction?

"See Mike? Told you she must have a new boyfriend." She faked a laugh and took Michael's hand. Her eyes turned to Abelard Lindsay again.

"Actually knowing we are not alone in our mourning is more than we hoped for. It is a tragedy and I know how much she loved this place. It gives me comfort she spend her last hours somewhere she loved." Jane said. "We really should not take any more of your time."

    Abelard Lindsay

Abelard smiled at her story, because it was so obviously a lie. He played along of course.

"Mikey, Mikey, keeping a dirty little secret from your family? What is wrong with you? Does she not deserve to be an honorable woman?" He laughed a recognized the man's look. Escape ways, numbers. He was ex-military and still rather obvious at it. He gave him a knowing smile. If he wanted to kill them the other two really did not matter. Abelard was more than capable to do that himself. "Claire is no longer with us. Left poor Scott here for a guy called ... what was name again Scott?"

"Damian." Scott said and looked at Lindsay as if wondering what his Boss was doing.

"Damian Ashcroft, right. A bit above poor Scott's paygrade here. The Ashcrofts you know?" Abelard smiled his generous smile again. "Also he burns through pretty young things. She will probably be at home in no time with lots of new Gucci bags." Abelard laughed. Then he turned serious.

"Well, Laura made my Club famous it seems. Looks like everyone knows she was here at that night. Not sure if that is the kind of publicity I want." He shrugged. "Poor thing. Partying away, going home and BAMM!" He clapped his hands. "So random, is it? How everyone of us makes one tiny wrong decision and his life is over." The last words probably sounded exactly as threatening as he wanted them to.

"So can I do anything that makes accepting her death any easier?" He asked and looked at Jane now. "Anything?"

The smile flickered, the veiled threat not so veiled, though it seemed by design. He squeezed Jane's hand a little tighter, though he kept the forced smile on his face. He really wanted to get out of here now. Part of him didn't believe for a second the name given. Damian Ashcroft, that name meant nothing to him, but he would take it if it meant escape.

"As long as she is alright. I'm sure we'll catch up with Claire." He said with a chuckle playing this all off.

"Thank you." He said with a solemn nod, "For taking some time to tell us. You've done more than enough." Carefully he started to get to his feet, arm still around Jane, guiding her up as well.

    Abelard waved her comment away.

"Friends of Laura will always be welcome!" He laughed and turned to his bat. "A toast. I insist!" He walked over getting four tumblers and filled them with a twenty one years old McCallan.

His mind used the time to put the pieces together. A friend of Laura showed up with Claire's brother in tow.

That was not a coincidence, was it? It could not be. He stepped behind the bar and put ice from the always filled cooler into the drinks. His eyes went to his gun he had there. The silenced gun would be his weapon of choice.

He mused for a moment if he should not pick it up and put a bullet into each of their heads. Probably they did not work alone though and who knew what their partners knew already? Also Scott had made such a fuss about them down there. Murdering them probably would confirm any theory they were working on and draw in only more interested parties.

Also what did they know? There was no way they knew what happened that night. If they did they would not be here. No they were poking in the dark.

He took the glasses and handed one to each of them and Scott.

"On Laura! A bright young woman taken from us too early." He said and raised his glass. Scott raised his glass to join the toast in silent obidience.

Leaving the Vauxhall Inn, Vauxhall London

Robert needed to know what Nicholas had done after he had fallen asleep. Probably this was about the Butcher. He had tipped them off and now the man was dead. They suspected him of course. That he had expected. The whole thing smelled of Miller.

He wondered if he should have let Nicholas loose to settle the score. He remembered the headstrong cop too well. A cop ready to bend the rules.

"Bob is it? I need something from you. Can you print me something?" Robert asked and opened his mobile. Social Networks. They had existed in his days, too. Nowadays the youth willingly shared what they did all over it obviously. He quickly found the teenage daughter of Miller and looked through her history. He had a so called smartphone for two days now and wondered how he had ever lived without one. He found what he was looking for. 24th of December she had shared a picture from Instagram. Another Social Media site that seemed to specialize on pictures of kittens and girls in Bikini. And occasionally a family portray obviously.

He made a screenshot. He needed two attempts to get it right, but finally showed it to the driver.

"This." He said and showed it to Bob.

Jane did not know how close she had been to dying, but the moment he fell silent she felt a shiver running down her spine.

She received the tumbler with what was certainly an excellent Single Malt, but she despised any kind of Whisky. She would drink it anyway.

"To our friend." She said and wondered for a moment if he would drug them. Why would he. They were at his mercy anyway.

Looking at Michael she smiled and drank the damned stuff in one fluid move forcing it down her threat.

Michael watched Lindsay as he maneuvered around the office gathering up a few glasses and pour a bit of whisky into them. In that moment Michael knew he was looking into the eyes of a killer. They were eyes he had looked into before. He didn't tense, didn't get defensive but he watched with a closer eye. On his guard for anything. It wasn't a stare down but one would be forgiven for thinking it was. It wasn't the security guard that was the most dangerous, it was the man calling the shots.

He forced a smile on his face as he took the drink waiting subconsciously for Lindsay to drink first.

"To Laura." He said before he drained the glass in one gulp. The former soldier did like his whisky, but now was not the time to savor it now was a time to get out quickly with their lives.

Abelard watched Jane and Michael down their Whisky and took a sip of his enjoying the taste. He smiled.

"You are ex-military right?" He said then to Michael in conversation tone. "Where did you serve? I can always tell who is a soldier. Quite a few of my men worked for the armed forces. You are not looking for a job are you?"

Abelard looked at Scott. The man would probably not understand. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

One of the many things he had learned from his great rival the King. He had learned many things from studying him.

Taking another small sip he smiled as if making clear it was his drink that had to be finished for this meeting to be over.

It was agonizing watching the other man slowly sipping his whisky. It felt like a cat toying with a mouse. They were caught and now he was just drawing out the moment. It was a display of power, they were at his mercy. He forced a smile on his face playing along with Lindsay.

"Yes 3rd Royal Regiment of Scotland." He said matter of factly, "Served in Afghanistan mostly. And no, not looking for a job right now. My pension after 15 years of service is fine." He left off the fact that it was good for now, that it wouldn't be enough forever. But it was his own less subtle power play. He couldn't be bought, not with money or the promise of a job.

Jane watched Lindsay sip his Whisky as it was probably the proper way to enjoy it. In slow motion he seemed not to be in a hurry. Then he offered Michael a job. She doubted it was a genuine offer. He was probing, testing, learning about his prey.

"Oh Michael, you always complain about barely getting along. Maybe in a few days you guys should talk." Jane did not plan to let Michael go into this hell to meet the devil again, but they probably needed that option later on. "You should think about it. Laura always spoke highly about Mr. Lindsay."

When was the man done with his damned Whisky?

Abelard smiled. "Afghanistan. Rough spot. My friend Jordan here did two tours there before joining us." He pointed at his American bodyguard who would not respond until directly addressed. "We pay better than a crappy pension so if you change your mind ... friends of Laura are my friends, too."

Finally Abelard turned and walked back to his desk, emptying his Whisky. "It is a dangerous thing, looking for Laura's murder. That is what you two are doing, right? Trying to find who did this." Lindsay shrugged. "I understand. I am looking for the guy too. He killed my step-daughter. Such things cannot go unpunished, right?"

He sat down and smiled. "I need to do some business. It was a pleasure meeting you two. If I can do anything for you, you know where to find me." He leaned back and nodded to Scott. "He will get you a cab."

They were harmless enough he had decided. Digging the wrong holes in the wrong garden. A bona fide chance to infiltrate his operations they had just turned down. They were not knowing anything.

"Best regards to Claire once you find her."

He needed to concentrate on a much more dangerous player in the game. The King had been expected tonight and he had not shown up. Which meant he had been busy with other stuff.

Fjodor and the Libanese were also to be taken care of.

"I'll keep it in mind." Michael said with a forced smile on his face. The tension released as Lindsay finished his whisky, they were finally free. Though not without a final warning from the man. Hard to tell if it was a threat or a genuine warning. Though it would do little to dissuade Michael from looking for his sister or Jane from finding out what happened to Laura. They were on this trail whether they Lindsay liked it or not.

"Aye love, been a long night." He said getting to his feet stepping next to Jane and escorting her out, waiting with her for Scott to make his move.

Scott made a gesture to follow them and left the bureau first. They made it down the stairs and took a short-cut towards the entrance.

"Your sister was quite a wild one." Scott commented as he gestured one of the three security holding the now impressive line of people at bay to get a cab. The man silently followed the command.

"But she never really fit, if you know what I mean. This is not her world." He folded his hands and looked at both of them.

"If you want some advise, stop digging up stuff about Laura. You might not like everything you find. Quite the contrary." He gave both a smile. "See you around."

Bob nodded. "Sure, Sir." He said and changed his route. He stopped next to a copy shop and took the mobile of Robert, sending himself the picture and then getting out and giving Robert back his mobile.

The police had followed them and was now patiently waiting, not making surveillance a secret.

The mobile vibrated that moment. It was Lyle.

    NEED TO TALK TO NICHOLAS.

That was all the message there was.

Bob came back and handed Robert the print. It was photo-quality.

    Nicholas Anger
    Internet Cafe, Croyden

Nicholas took a corner that made sure nobody could see over his shoulder. Even at this hour kids were in the shop which had eight computers lined up for public use. It was a neon lighted cheap little thing, but the owner was the right kind of uninterested in the affairs of his customers and everyone who was doing business here at this early hour had entered into the unspoken pact of everyone minding their own business.

Nicholas put the USB into the slot that seemed to be made for it and a menu popped up immediately. The computers worked very intuitively nowadays. He opened the files and began studying them. After a few minutes he opened a browser, was asked if he wanted a private session and answered yes. He began to read.

The USB stick obviously had documents on it from what was called a Crypto exchange. The criminal underworld had it's own currency nowadays. Untraceable and private. Bitcoin, Ether. Ripple. Ripple seemed especially popular nowadays for larger transactions. The USB held a larger transaction. Someone had sold 100 million in various Crypto currencies and made the market price of these volatile assets spike down. A warning system had recorded the transaction from the exchange. This was internal data. Nicholas was not surprised. The 16k probably ran the whole system.

Theoretically the transactions were intraceable. How convenient. This transaction had been too big for a liquidation of the position through the market. After 30 million were closed a limit kicked in. The rest was settled through a peer2peer transaction, a direct exchange of digital currency against real fiat money.

A trap. Whoever had acquired the data had offered to buy it and paid 70 million to acquire those 'coins'. The trick was in the peer2peer network the seller became visible. His IP was traced by the exchange which acted as a trustee to settle the transaction for an obscene fee.

Nicholas was familiar with IP tracking, that one had been around ten years ago and seemingly hasn't changed a lot. The IP lead to London. It lead to the Lancester Road in Notting Hill. Nicholas leaned back. That was the street Lyle had bought Laura a flat in. That was where she had died.

He checked the date. It was the day of her death. Earlier though. The transaction had been done at six. Long before she went to the club, returned and died. Had Laura invested some of the funds he left her into Crypto? From what he saw that could have made her very rich as it had gone up in a steep curse. Or had someone stolen those assets and she had to die so she could not tell anyone? If you stole a hundred million, you probably needed to kill the owner to get away with it. If she had invested early enough a simple 75k could have become a hundred million.

There was another nugget of information. The bank account this money had been send to. The EUROBANK in Cyprus. An Institute well known for not being picky when it came to clients. He would have to get Robert to check it. He was much better with this financial stuff.

Nicholas leaned back and thought about this. Laura had not touched the money from him he had assumed. She lived a normal lifestyle, earning as a freelance journalist. He had thought she had morale doubts, but had she truly been financially independent? Even then she would have spend some of the money. A Porsche or a penthouse flat. Something to show off. He knew little about her, but that seemed to be what young people would do. Or had she earned the Crypto by other means? Was this the missing link? He had to follow it. This was no coincidence. Pulling the stick of he put it into his jacket and looked around. He took the coke light he had ordered and under the table poured into the casing of the computer. It hissed and the screen went to an unnerving blue as the computer broke. He got up and made his way out of the cafe.

"Vauxhall." He just told the driver and his thoughts wandered to Laura and her Crypto business.

Jane clenched her teeth to avoid yelling at Scott. She would not like what she found? He best friend ... more than her best friend ... had been murdered, she could hardly imagine what she would like less.

"Thanks." She smiled and got into the car. "Paddington Station, please." She told the cab driver. No way she would give her address to Lindsay's men or the driver he called. At Paddington they would find another cab to pay in cash.

Once Michael was inside she turned to him. "Thanks for having my back." She smiled and got her USB drive out of her boot.

    Outside the Kingslayer

As Jane clenched her jaw Michael clenched his fist. Every fiber of his being wanted to give Scott a hard right cross, right across his smug stupid face. He might of had his differences with his sister but that didn't give him any right to insult her, to belittle her right to his face.

Instead of committing violence upon his person Michael merely nodded his thanks and took a seat next to Jane. He didn't much care where they were heading just as long as it was away from here. With that he sent a short message to Crow.

'Got "escorted" from the Club, you'll have to make you're own way home.' He wasn't going to give Crow all the messy details not over a text message that could be read by god know who. He'd explain things when he got the chance.

"Think nothing of it." Michael said looking out the window. "You looked outnumbered and I wasn't going to leave you to the wolves. Call me stuck in my ways, but you don't leave someone in trouble. I just didn't expect to be drawn into the office of one of the most dangerous men in London." Looking at the flash drive he gave a smile as well. "At least our goals were achieved." He hated himself as soon as he said it. This wasn't a military operation, this was a bungled investigation undertaken by two people that had no business interfering. But, they were here now, and neither of them was going to stop.

"How long do you think it will take for you to get something useful off that thing?"

Jane nodded in appreciation. Indeed they had faced Abelard Lindsay. Probably one of the apex predators of London.

"I need to emulate it and crack his password. Then we should be able to read everything that was on his drive not encrypted. Emails, if he uses outlook or such. Data. Calendar. Pics. Everything." She smiled. "I would bet my left hand there will be something on it." She shrugged. "Couple of hours."

She checked her mobile for the first time since she entered the club. Laura's dad had replied. She shivered. Speaking of Apex Predators.

"Could I ask you to have my back one more time? I have to meet someone tomorrow and I am not sure how dangerous he is." She said and texted back. "I want to know when they were where with your Sister, too. I don't buy this Damian Ashcroft story. Scott had something to hide."

Robert Landau kinda was a suspect. But from what she had seen he also hunted whoever did this. If he was who Laura said he would probably have some insight.

Michael nodded his head as Jane ran down the list of things she could find. He understood most of the words, but not how she could get at it. That was all very much above his paygrade. But he did see her confidence in finding something on the drive.

"Good, I would hate to have gone through that for nothing." The former soldier sat back into his seat looking back out the window. Then she made mention of having another meeting, someone possibly dangerous, someone that might know where Claire was. "Aye, I'll help you out. Least I can do, with ya' helping trying to find my sister." He looked to Jane with a slight smile. "Good so I wasn't the only one that thought his story was a load of bull..." He stopped himself. "Right you have a way to get a gun before our next meeting?" He asked remembering what she had said before about getting a gun. "Cause I would feel a little safer with a firearm given where we are treading."

Jane smiled at him as he confirmed she would not be alone. Then he brought up the gun.

"The guy I would usually ask you föund dead in his flat." She sighed. "I know where to order one online. Not sure we have it by tomorrow. They might not have an express delivery. Not exactly Amazon, you know?" She would like to have one herself, she had to admit. This case was not solved on a computer as she expected. She had sit opposite of Abelard Lindsay tonight with nothing but her wits.

"I try." She said though and leaned back. "Maybe we should ask Albert? He works for some tough guys sometimes."

She sighed and felt she needed to explain a few things. A little transparency was the least she owed him.

"My friend Laura got murdered the night your sister was last in Kingslayer. Laura was there, too. I believe she was in trouble and knew it. She had bought something from Millard who you found dead earlier. The club is owned and run by the guys your sister hang out with who are absolute psychos. I cannot help, but think this is too much of a coincidence. They say Laura got killed by this serial killer. Not buying it. She was on to something. Maybe your sister knows something and is hiding? Maybe with this Damian Ashcroft?" She thought out loud. "Could she have met Laura there to give her info? If so Claire is in danger, too."

    Jane's head hurled around.

"Maybe you should crush on my couch tonight. So we can go to work once the drive is open." She would probably need his help to interpret what they found. But truth was she would feel a lot safer with Michael around.
