Open world Zelda is going to be a thing, they have pretty much said that the Zelda of the past will stay in the past.

I don't see why they can't do open world but still have that element of needing a hookshot to do something. You may be able to get to place X without the Hookshot, but the Hookshot makes it easier. You may be able to complete dungeon Y but the boomerang simplifies things etc...

Also, give me proper dungeons. TotK is a vast improvement on BotW but it's still not quite right.

Jumped to 75/139 side quests tonight after speaking with the guy in LookOut Landing who wanted me to defeat 3 large monsters and then 3 unusual monsters. It felt really good when I beat the Hyrule Bridge Gleeok and realize that I didn't take any damage. I only needed/used 1 rocket. #humblebrag

I’ve always thought the solution is simple. Do both. Open world and necessary items and puzzles to achieve certain important things.

Aonuma has confirmed in an interview today or yesterday that there will be no DLC for Tears of the Kingdom as the developers want to turn to the next Zelda game.

I remember reading in an earlier interview from the summer that there are likewise no plans for any remakes right now either, as the Zelda team wants to focus exclusively on the future, not the past.

Could this mean we'll be getting the next Zelda title in less than six years this time? :p

I would suspect that that wouldn't rule out remakes of 2D titles or original 2D titles. Grezzo developed LA Re, for instance. So that wouldn't take away from the Nintendo Zelda team's focus.

I expect that in the next game it will be possible to go diving and there will be cities underwater to explore.

After the sky it's the next logical step.

They did explore a more futuristic approach for BOTW, as I recall. Wouldn't be surprised if some of that emerges in the next installment just to set it apart from BOTW/TOTK's map.

I am expecting that they'll improve the swim mechanics, and then perhaps they'll give you some special ability for which you can stay underwater for a long time.

I’m playing through Breath of the Wild for the first time. After about a month it’s Four Divine Beasts down and now I’m going to any parts of the map I missed (just found a tropical beach village) and playing the DLP content.

This game is astounding. I was surprised to finally hit an invisible wall where the game displayed text saying I could not go any further. It was the the edge of the map.

I seem to have a habit of entering new areas the back way. So I leave Death Mountain and find out there is a grand road leading up to Goro villiage while I climbed my way up to the volcano instead.

And yesterday I found an apocalypse now style ruins with a long river leading to it but I discovered it from behind so started at the temple ending and traced the river back out to friendlier areas.

Two takes on that game - Skyward Sword HD.

Okay three. That game was excellent. But felt too long by the end. It felt too long because I was aware I was always in a box. The illusion of an open world didn’t last the entire game. Like it was so long I became aware of the mechanics of how the world was built and entering new areas I’d never seen before would already be aware of the invisible boundaries knowing I could never see beyond or travel into. I was aware the over world was constructed like the dungeons but with the illusion of sky for walls and ceiling.

I think we took what is arguably a step backwards with things like swimming in Breath of the Wild because BotW is employing laws of physics (for lack of a better term) to the game world in general. Gravity, inertia, velocity, traction, etc are handled in a more real world way on everything. They didn’t have swimming figured out to work under those more realistic parameters and couldn’t or didn’t want to fake it like previous games.

Then again swimming is more realistic in BotW so maybe it’s not a step backwards and we never have to worry about link running out of air.

They can always circumvent real world physics and limitations in future games with items, ie: the flippers.

Speaking of the flippers, I do hope to see the return of items like the hook shot or maybe even the gauntlets to allow for lifting of heavy objects that could be linked to progression of certain areas. Like discussed earlier, a mix of old school and new school wouldn't be a bad idea if executed well.

Im enjoying the new spin on moving heavy objects with the rune which lets you build up energy in the object that is released at once moving it.

Sometimes not having access to the standard Zelda items feels like something is missing. Other times it’s so completely freeing.

At first I missed Link not having a version of his familiar green costume and stocking like cap. By the time I got access to some of his famous costumes thanks to Amiibo cards I felt like like those clothes were for other versions of Link. This Link feels more personalized to me playing this game thanks to customized clothing colors and the effort earning other sets of specialized gear.

I can kill guardians now with little effort. But earlier when they could kill Link in a single shot it was absolutely exhilarating sneaking toward Hyrule Castle hiding from their gaze. Such a cool War of the Worlds vibe. I didn’t expect that.

Then later finding a way into the castle and scavenging gear and riches while still not being able to kill the guardians but being confident I could evade them. Really fun game play.

Pretty neat OOT short film someone made in Unreal emulating a Ghibli-like animation style, focusing on Castle Town:

I've seen that Link one at the Nintendo Store in person. It is pretty impressive seeing him basically life sized.

Aonuma has said they’ve done everything that they can with this version of Zelda (thus no DLC). So I would expect a new direction for the next game.

A fascination little glitch I never knew about:

But I think we can figure out what is causing this, even if the video maker couldn't. The game normally opens the other side of any door you pass through/unlock. So, if it believes that you are coming through a south door to exit through a north door, then that north door must have been unlocked/opened. And that overworld/dungeon movement transition is triggering the game to believe that.

The remake is really good. Very faithful, but with a charming art style. Occasionally minor performance issues, but really solid on the whole. Been chipping away at it ever since it came out. Finished off Turtle Rock maybe a month or two ago. I think that leaves one more dungeon before the final one.
