But do you realize how bizarre this reasoning is? To end the unwarranted privilege of religious groups enjoy with the government, one can just file lawsuits to end those arrangements. As has been happening for over half a century now, to considerable effect. I don't see where this new tactic adds anything at all.

I read the article before making my first comment in this thread. It's not a very sensible move.

The Ten Commandments monument is allowed because it's a "free speech" zone. They're probably correct that many of the supporters of the original monument are banking on that fact that no other groups will actually avail themselves of the opportunity to make their own monuments. But that doesn't mean that this move was at all sensible or coherent.

Atheism manifestly is not the important life-organizing prinicple for atheists that faith is for the Christians who put up the Ten Commandments monument. So why act as if it was? Why not erect some celebration of the things they actually do think are important in life? Why was angering someone with a political tit-for-tat worth so much energy, expenditure, and the evident misconceptions it creates about what atheism actually is?

 

Seeing that I actually am a Christian, probably won't be doing that.
