the dominos guy just showed up at the library with like ten pizzas so i guess a lot of people are in mourning.

 

Just heard that author/costume designer John Mollo, who won his first Oscar for ANH, died on Oct. 25th, while Oscar-nominated cinematographer Harry Stradling, Jr. died on Oct. 17th.

Okay, they aren't big names, but they were honored professionals in the film industry, and they worked on some very good movies.

 

Sorry to hear about Mr. Mollo. His costumes for Star Wars were very inventive and some used off the shelf clothing (Luke's costume comes to mind.) Rest in Peace.

odd airplane to die in. It's supposed to have some kind of full-plane parachute system that's mandatory if registered in the U.S., according to wikipedia.

 

So Halladay had just purchased the vehicle and had owned it for less than a month.

 

The ICON A5 has been a fairly radical and controversial design from the start. I've read a couple of pilot reports in major aviation magazines. Its design philosophy is more jet ski than airplane in many ways. Projected performance numbers were seen by many as too good to be true, and then it turned out to be heavier than expected and very limited in payload (overloaded with full fuel and two normal weight people on board). Then ICON came out with a pre-delivery contract that required owners to agree not to fly the plane in certain conditions. Many of the buyers who had already put money down were decidedly unhappy about that move. I believe that contract was eventually modified to something more acceptable to most pilots.

I hadn't heard about the latest crash, but I just read a report on the one a few months ago. It seems that the pilot was flying low over a lake, made a wrong turn, and found himself in a canyon too steep to climb out of and too narrow to turn around in, what we call a box canyon. A simple case of pilot error there.

As for the parachute system, Jules is right, that can't always save the day, especially if the pilot was flying at low level. Parachutes need some height to open up and let the airplane down gently (relatively speaking).

All that is off the top of my head without checking on anything, but I think what I said is basically true.
