I say that before Mods are appointed, they are required to take a test. A test is sent to them by E-Mail based on the TOS, say with twenty questions on it. If they get, oh, say, fourteen or less questions right, they do not become Mods, but fifteen or higher and they do.

I also suggest a board of Mods be established to review a future Mods record to make sure there is no trolling or flamming in their past. As of now, Mods are invited to join by other Mods, and I think you'd be able to disearn a good Mod from someone a certain Mod likes and appoints for no reason.

I mean, I may be overstepping my bounds, but it seems like the newer Mods aren't quite as "capable" as those with experience.

    Thank you for your time,
    TSP

I don't think these things are needed.

The test idea is not a good one, as most of moderating consists of common sense, and not a strict memorizing of a set of rules.

As for the screening process, obviously they're careful in who they allow in. If the usernotes say, "Two years for posting incest porn" - chances are that person won't be made a mod.

Obviously, as they're still testing the waters.

Most mod candidates are suggested because they have proven that they know how the boards run, and that they know the rules. Besides, what's to stop someone from cheating on the "test"?

Every potential mod is reviewed, and we do look at their history and posting style. Mods aren't just appointed for "no reason", every opening is discussed as a group.

I think all mods should be required to make a 30 or above on the ACT exam.

And know how to spell their username properly.

Being possible to have more than one window open at a time (multi taski-wha?) chances are they could read the TOS as they took the test.

Open book tests aren't too hard often.

Plus, the mods discuss new mods already...

    Oh.

    Nevermind.

but I still think some kind of test should be given

Maybe a group of Mods could post a scenario and the Mod-to-be has to solve it.

Who would decide what the solution was?

Q: If you see a thread titled, "STAR WARZ IS GAY!!!!!11", you:

    a) post in it, saying "LOL! True."
    b) lock it
    c) lock it and ban the creator
    d) abuse your moderator powers
    e) all of the above

If you answered c), you just might be mod material!

If mods thought potential mods weren?t qualified for the job, they wouldn?t choose them. You could say it's logical.

All the Mods get together and decide a group of scenarios, like a flammer, a troller, sommeone with a multitude of socks, someone making death threats, etc., and post them after agreeing on the correct course of action as regulated by the TOS.

    All the Mods get together

How about sticking with the current method, where moderators all have a chance to give input on a candidate for promotion.

It would see if Mod nominees know how to handle the situation.

Flaming, trolling, and death threats are some of the easiest things to notice and deal with. Just about everyone could guess how to take care of those situations.

    Those are just examples.

Others could be advertising, the posting of pirated materials, the handling of disputes, etc.

Wouldn't the mods already have notived if you're the type of person who could handle this stuff? If you have the ability to deal with it but don't always have the knowledge, you could always ask other mods.

Again, it comes to common sense. The only question a mod needs to answer is: Do you have a liberal dosage of common sense?

[HINT: The answer should be "yes"]

Possible Mods, if I'm not mistaken, are chosen for leadership and diplomatic abilities, which does not mean they'd know how to use their newfound powers correctly.

Might it be that the Mod Squad considers whether or not candidates would be able to use their powers correctly if chosen?
