What are you, desperately coming through history for a time when Clintonites might be desirable?

In protest of a good thread being locked, I wanted to add my own serious contribution:

I have always had immense respect for Alexander II. His decision to back the Union helped keep the British from siding with the Confederacy in the Civil War. Even more rarely, he had the courage and principle to apply similar policies at home, liberating the serfs. Insofar as I know, he was upright as it was counted among the czars.

Why are any of these threads still open but Darth Guy's actually interesting thread is closed?

AstroDroid88, why did YOU pick Calvin Coolidge? If being so conservative is important to you... why is it important when picking the best President, and what made Coolidge so conservative?

I know Guy's was a parody of mine, but I thought it was pretty interesting too.

As for mine... I wish I could have included them all in one poll. I don't like the 10 options max for polls.

FDR first, Teddy second, Truman third.

Eisenhower gets points for speaking out against for-profit defense industries, loses points for his lack of real support for civil rights.

Agreed. FDR gets major points for the Depression and World War II. Teddy Roosevelt gets major points for the American national park system and Truman gets points for de-segregrating the armed forces. Eisenhower loses points for mucking around with the Middle East, but does get some points for sending the 101st into Little Rock to force school desegregation.

My top two are FDR for the new deal and taking us out of the depression, and Theodore for trust busting and eliminating monopolies.

Teddy. He had the same "America **** yeah!" mentality as Reagan, but was actually competent. [face_flag]

One of the Roosevelts is probably the best, but I have a soft spot for Wilson.

Fun fact: Theodore Roosevelt was used as a template for the design of Dr. Ivo Robotnik, the nemesis of video game mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. :D

Franklin Roosevelt, for sure. Guiding us through the Great Depression and World War II, and building the foundation of modern American government and the modern Democratic Party, truly trying to help the middle class and the poor, and ending our isolationism after Pearl Harbor and establishing the United States as a superpower.

Harry Truman, because he got to use nukes. It's been 70 years since anyone has been able to nuke anyone. That's a long time between nuking someone.

These are interesting but you might want to trim them down a bit into historical eras: federalist, jeffersonian,Jacksonian, progressive, etc. These are just huge chunks especially this one.

But I picked FDR. New Deal. Guidance through most of WW2 and the mobilization behind it. Hands down the most accomplished.

I actually like Ike more personally but as far as accomplishments go he was more of a steady hand during the 50s and helped preserve the status quo, which included the New Deal but also segregation(with the exception of the Little Rock nine).

Yeah but he got shot and still finished the speech he was giving at the time. ****ing churchill was an unreconstructed racist and from a later generation than ted and never did anything 1/24th as badass as that and yet I'm sure you still think he's the bee's knees
