I don't believe so. I see him being more of a general type to lead the ground team. Great with a blaster, and if Poe teaches him to fly an X-Wing he could help them in the air as well. But it could also be possible Finn has powers he hasn't tapped into, because he isn't aware he has them.

How does Finn last two milliseconds against Kylo Ren in combat or avoid slicing off his own arms if he isn't Force sensitive? Or do you no longer have to be Force sensitive in order to use a lightsaber in the new canon?

This all depends on how the writers handle the force in these new movies. If its something you are born with...and he doesnt have it..then he is out of luck. If it is something that can be taught but that some have natural abilities....well...he has a good shot.

Umm, General Grievous and Pre Viszla used lightsabers without the Force in the Legends canon (and Disney canon). Finn also had melee training (Before the Awakening). It's also shown that Kylo Ren was toying with Finn; as soon as Finn exploited an opening and tagged him, Kylo "finished the game" in five seconds or so.

The Force seems to be handled the same as it always was form the first movie; only specific people (those with a high enough medi-chlorian count, as the prequels clarified) can use it. I don't see how that's changed, or can change; the Laws of Physics may change, but the actual processes that those Laws are trying to define and explain never change.

21-87 inspired THX 1138: "Cell 2187" references the short film 21-87, directed by Arthur Lipsett, a film that reportedly inspired George Lucas to make the film THX-1138."

Can you tell me at what time she says this, because that's definitely a change from the OT:

"The idea of Vader using telekinetic powers during his fight with Luke was created during story meetings. There was concern, however, that the audience might think back to the first film and wonder why Vader didn't use all his powers on Ben; this was easily explained by the fact that Ben was possibly stronger than Vader. George Lucas and Leigh Brackett also discussed the different levels of the Force; maybe Ben was a six, Vader was a four and Luke is now at level two." - Annotated Screenplays

Sorry for the back-to-back posts, but I watched the video to the part when Kathleen says this.....I don't know if she got it confused, or if it's a case of Lucas later changing his mind (which has happened). That said, Obi-wan did defeat Anakin in ROTS, and held him off quite well in ANH. I'm wondering what is JJ's take on what Lucas told him...not that it matters as far as the ST goes.

In response to McCullough’s assertion that human beings are merely complex machines, Kroitor says, "Many people feel that in the contemplation of nature and in communication with other living things, they become aware of some kind of force, or something, behind this apparent mask which we see in front of us, and they call it God." Lucas has subsequently confirmed that the Force “was an echo of the phrase on 21-87”. The crux of the biggest films on the planet started life in an artsy Canadian short.

Well, one would be the fact that Ben was shot in the hip which is affecting his concentration. Two would be that Ben is messed up from having just killed his father which had the opposite trick of making him feel weaker and not stronger.

He might not be a Jedi, but it is possible that the Force switches something on that allows him to break free of his conditioning.

Actually, according to Finn's backstory, he had a history of questionable behavior during training (taking pity on fellow soldiers, etc.)

Can someone give any evidence from the 6 Lucas films that only people "born with the force" can learn how to use it? Has it ever been said in any of the novels?

Clearly, there is a genetic aspect to the force, in that the more midichlorians one has the more talent or inclination one has to be good at connecting to it. But the way I understand it, it's like comparing Lebron James as a baby to the average person. Lebron was born with natural talent and ability and has a much better chance at making the nba, but that doesn't mean the average person cannot practice and learn to be as good or possibly even better. Force sensitive children were taken in the past because they were the most likely To be strong in the force. But it's not exclusive.

The question basically is this: Is everyone born with midichlorians?

As I understand it, the answer is yes.

Yeah, the Before the Awakening novel seems to suggest that the First Order's intent was to train their troopers to be unquestioning and obey all orders without any thought, but in Finn's case (either by his predisposition or other fluke), they wound up getting a guy who believed that they were going out to bring justice to the galaxy and then acted on that (and partially to escape) when he saw that they were the bad guys.

As i understand it, every one has midi-chlorians, but only a select have a high enough count to use the Force and become Jedi. So the basketball analogy isn't a good one, since anyone can learn to play the game (even if they can't go pro and need to stick to pickup games), but a person with a low enough count can't do anything with the Force, no matter how badly they want to.

Yes, but high midi counts aren't the end-all, be-all. Anakin was defeated many times despite his high count. Training does count for something.

There are those who are wise with the force like Maz, and those who can manipulate and use the force like the jedi/dark side.

It depends if the ST is going to reject the PT definition of the Force (biological).

If the ST accepts the PT definition, then we can see that Rey had a dormant Force which she learnt to tap into during TFA.
The same could happen to Finn as well, but the difference is that Finn was not "initialized" as Rey was with the lightsaber vision.

The other possibility is that in the ST, the Force is self-aware. Maybe the Force is now defined as the collective mind of all previous Force spirits, including Light and Dark side users (although we SO FAR have no evidence of a Dark spirit).
In this sense, they could have choosen Rey to be USED by the Force, as a conduit for it. Which explains why she gets the Force so easily.
Using this explanation, the Force did not choose Finn, but maybe will if necessary.

The ST needn't, and won't, deny the PT definition....which is largely biological. Again, midi count isn't everything.

That said, the ST needn't, and won't, bring up midi counts at all. The OT didn't suffer for lack of midi counts. Lucas simply introduced it as a means to show how special Annakin was. It served its purpose.

The higher the count, the stronger the connection is to the Force. But as Lucas noted, Anakin's mistake on Mustafar was letting his anger control him rather than controlling his anger. And being extremely arrogant, which he was in saying that Obi-wan shouldn't underestimate his powers, was the height of arrogance.

Given that we have a director who is a PT fan in Rian Johnson, it is very possible that he can make references to Midichlorians if it is relevant to the story. It wasn't for Abrams and Kasdan.

The point being, there are many other factors besides a midi count that can affect how well a Force user performs.

And midis won't be coming up again.

Why're we assuming that the rules of the Force are even going to change in the first place. Everything that's come out of LucasFilm these days pretty much says that the prequels and their information about the Force is how things work.

(Also, is it a generational thing to hate the midi-chlorians? I was still a kid when the prequels were coming out and I like that explanation. It made more sense then the old, you're just different than the norm that was used prior.)

Since this is speculating on the future of the character, we're going to lock this, and ask everyone to use the Finn/Boyega thread in the 8&9 forum for further discussion. We may move this one over there at a later date, If we decide more than one thread is needed.
