ST Character Names Announced - Updated on Page 46

I feel like it has multiple connotations (phantasm, phasmids, plasma), and that's why I'm a fan of it. If Christie is an antagonist with this name and the (semi-)association with praying mantises is intentional, it's a fitting name for a deadly female villain.

 

You all are making good points. I guess I'm mellowing and/or coming around to it, because I don't hate the name as much as I did this afternoon.

Huh.... Sounds more like a marvel name to me. Oh well, I'm feeling rather indifferent about it.

 

Phasma sounds to me like asthma. Anyway, here's an interesting piece of dialogue:

"Captain Phasma!"

"Yes Sir!"

"Make ready to land our troops beyond the energy field and deploy the fleet so that nothing gets off that system.
You are in command now, Admiral Phasma."

Reminds me of the old 80's tv show Captain Power and the Soldiers of Fortune. Oddly enough, the villain was a partial cyborg...

 

Sounds silly and fun, and it irritates all the right types. Works for me.

 

Or Phantom as in Phantom Menace

 

These names are silly! They are nothing like the inspired General Grievous or Chewbacca. So tired of my childhood being ruined.

 

well Captain Phasma has it been confirmed yet? anyway I like it, obviousy "Captain" is not the character's first name lol I get the feeling this is Gwendoline's character so it's a villain name? that's good it's not a "Name to run away from really fast" here lately a lot of villains have had names like that: Grievous, Kallus Savage Oppress, Maul so it's a good change of pace it's a normal name and that's good

Everytime I tell my wife about the new names (she's a casual fan) she rolls her eyes and says, quietly, "what?"

 

Not sure how I feel about this one. i feel like maybe it looks better on paper, but it feels awkward to say outloud...at least to me.

 

Are you being serious? Yeah, those names actually meant something. Comparing those names above (most from extremely minor roles) to the names we've heard is pretty ridiculous.

Yean, Captain Phasma is beyond stupid. Period. It sounds like a 5 year old coming up with his own superhero. I HIGHLY doubt it's for real. Someone's having fun in light of the other names. Finn is okay. Poe is also beyond stupid. We'll have to get use to it I suppose, but that doesn't make it any less stupid. Rey is fine if it's short for something. Other than that, it's a boy's name PERIOD.

It's okay to be impartial about the names. But anyone who claims they really like the names are completely full of @#$%.

That said, I was one of few who really liked the title The Force Awakens so anyone who says that I complain about everything can go suck on an exhaust pipe!

 

This is probably not a big deal - like Captain Typho turned out to be an almost non-existent character with a cool name. Though I hope Phasma is more important than Typho was.

 

The word phasma sounds like something that should be in ghostbusters

 

Yeah!! Because we all know it's simply impossible for people to have different opinions and tastes!

Sarcasm aside, my personal feeling is that these names aren't any better or worse than the names in previous SW films. Was "Ozzel" so much better than "Phasma"? Was "Han" really any better than "Finn"? "Poe" vs "Wedge"? I don't know... seems about on par to me.
