If that analogy was true, Bond would have to make ridiculous statements about Heineken on film.

The Converse thing was so blatant that it defied explanation.

I guess there's no accounting for bad taste.

What I would rather have seen was a movie that took its source material seriously, or one that was even based on it at all. If you call your movie "I, Robot" you have an obligation to do a little bit more than tack a couple of character names and the three laws of robotics onto your multimillion dollar Audi commercial.

EDIT: And the product placement in Bond is an entirely different issue that derives from Fleming's approach when he created that character. Bond is a snob who makes his taste known to people. It fits. Asimov never wrote a character that pimped his vintage 1959 Florsheims.

Whilst it's true that Bond abhorred shoelaces, he likely would have had his shoes made. :p

They didn't just make issue of his shoes, though. Smith was defiantly anachronistic in a variety of aspects in his personal life. As you will recall, there was a similarly reactionary component of the society in the original robot detective novels. Some of the same arguments were used ("can a robot write a symphony?"). In fact, the first case investigated by the Daneel/Baley team was based on exactly such a conspicuously flaunted piece of outerwear. The parallel journey form resentment to trust between those two and Smith/Sonny is also analogous. In light of all this, I have a bit of trouble with your complaint. No, Isaac Asimov would never have wrote a story about a guy that listens to Stevie Wonder. Is that what his stories were about? Because somewhere I'd gotten the mistaken impression they were supposed to explore humanity's grappling with the future, and the myriad interesting implications of robotics. I don't think less of the film for doing this through the format of an action film instead of something slower paced.

That would be great if it were the intent, or even the effect of the film.

My qualm lies less in the fact that it was an action film and more with the fact that it was an action film targeted to 10 year-olds. The whole exploration of humanity aspect is pretty backseat to the OMG ROBOTS WILL SMITH FIGHTING SFX.

I only saw I, Robot in theaters in 2004. I forgot everything about it except "AW HELL NAW," which is apparently to "Oh, hell no" as "WELCOME TO ERRF" is to "Welcome to Earth!" That is, pretty ****ing racist. I could've sworn he said "AW HELL NAW." :(

Plus he got VINTAGE 2004 CONVERSE SHOES. You could have bought them in 2004 and sold them to Will Smith in the FUTURE.

Hey Wocky are you a movie hipster? If so that's wonderful because that means I've actually met someone on the internets who hates more movies than I do!

I don't even get how I am Legend was considered at any point for a particularly noteworthy film.
