That quote is from age 23. It perhaps would've made more sense at age 13 or 93, but alas. She would have much more clever lines as she aged.

You really should quote the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Consort, Phillip. Much better.

"People think there's a rigid class system here, but dukes have been known to marry chorus girls. Some have even married Americans."

He said to a gathering of Labour MPs, "Ah, so this is the feminist corner then?"

That's trolling like you can't get away with otherwise, Maik. We should envy this man.

Big Suze's (Sophie Winkleman) uber-sexy poshness

particular attention in this scene on the pronunciation of "he's looking for someone more subservient on the internet", "irowq?", and "barolo"

I can't watch the clip as one is at work, but I assume you're enamoured by the correct pronunciation of Iraq as "Ihrahq" and not the incorrect, stroke-victim approach of "I-rack"?

true but jez, the other character in the scene, pronounces it roughly the way you (and i) do as well... big suze has a subtle twist in there that makes it sexy. you have to hear it for yourself when you have a chance

Personally I think that BANGladesh is a lot worse in terms of country name mispronunciations.

I snuck a listen on the phone. But I mean that's just the posh accent; do you not have that in the US? I mean, Sydney has a tonne of Brits because it's basically London with beaches and summer, so you get the range of accents including the posh darling set.

No arguments there; but so is "Lay-oss". "I-rack" just seems to be the way stupid people say Iraq. In fact if you look at Bush Sr vs Bush Jr, you see the difference right there...

I get confusion on how I say that, but I'm not going to screw pronunciation up because of laowei ears. It should be "Shunghai".

The problem is pretty much that when we Western devils were trying to turn Chinese into a form our uncultured eyes and mouths could pronounce, we started with a terrible version called Wade-Gilles. So you get names like Peking for Bei Jing (Bei means north, like in Tai Bei - north Taiwan; and Jing is basically "capital") or Taichung for Tai Zhong (Tai for Taiwan, Zhong meaning "middle"), Hsinchu for Xinzhu etc.

Chinese is a bastard to master, as it's tonal and the placement of the tongue inside your mouth is totally different to English. You curl it up to the roof a lot more to get the zhi chi shi sounds ("zhur, chur shur")/ When you say "Shanghai", you have to start the "Sh" sound with your tongue touching the roof of your mouth near your mouth.

One think you can say for sure is that people in Firefly don't speak a word of Chinese. :p

There are a handful of posh accents in the U.S. -- Boston Brahmin and Locust Valley Lockjaw in particular -- but almost nobody actually sounds like that. Too much reverse snobbery in the U.S., so you mostly only hear it in parodies. There used to be a very Anglicized, almost RP, accent (FDR and Henry Cabot Lodge had it) back when all the boarding schools taught elocution lessons to make the upper classes sound more cultivated.

The poshest accents are getting rarer in England though -- certainly the more conservative form of RP is hardly seen outside the royal family and the hereditary peerage now. It's a pity though, there's no lovelier form of English.

I'm shocked Ten likes it. :p

    i have diverse tastes. ;)

for instance, on the same show, i also find dobby's chavvier accent sexy

i cant find a clip where she does a really drawn out "uohzzz" for "us" that, say, lauren socha on misfits does, but she definitely does them. the "us" in this clip is pretty much swallowed, interesting enough

she does an archetypal "thourrh" and "wot" in this clip tho

Yes, I do know what thread this is and I risk opening myself to being mocked. And it's probably more appropriate to post this in the "History" thread.

All I want to say is:

As Americans commemorate the next few days, remember that no matter what the United States has faced in its history, in both adversity and triumph, the flag has always flown high. May it always do so.

    13th anniversary of September 11th
200th anniversary of Battle of Baltimore (September 12th-15th)

Pro-tip: posting some unironic "patriotic" claptrap in a thread that exists explicitly for the purposes of making LOL MURRICA jokes does not make you a martyr.
