Some good fantasy series for kids/middle readers/young adults: The Dark is Rising Series by Susan Cooper: Over Sea, Under Stone; The Dark is Rising, Greenwitch; The Grey King; Silver on the Tree (Award-winning twist on Arthurian legend.) The Prydain books by Lloyd Alexander: The Book of Three; The Black Cauldron; The Castle of Llyr; Taran Wanderer; The High King (Another Newbery Medal winning series--this based on Welsh mythology.) The Earthsea books by Ursula K. Le Guin (mentioned above): A Wizard of Earthsea; The Tombs of Atuan; The Farthest Shore; Tehanu; Tales from Earthsea; The Other Wind (Great series--interesting philosophy of magic--Le Guin just added the last two books to the series after a gap of twenty years or so.) A more sf spin on magic and wizards is the So You Want To Be A Wizard? series by Diane Duane. And of course, the classic by Tolkien, The Hobbit.
