No, Denzel got it, and Halle for Actress.

More than a few suggestions of the race issue...

Why is it a race issue if they won? It was a race issue when Denzel lost last time, and when Samuel L Jackson lost for Pulp Fiction. So why is it a race issue now that they've given an award to a couple of black actors?

The Oscars can't win it seems. Whoever they give it to there will always be someone saying someone else deserves it.

The race issue came into it because black people hardly ever won awards, and there was a fair bit of talk about it.
Now, two get it on the same day...hence talk of them trying to prove they arent racist.

I agree. It was damned if you do, damned if you dont for the Academy.

    Three, actually.

Sidney Poitier got a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Four, if you count Whoopi as host.

You just have to remember... they are actors.

My highlight from the Oscars was John Williams' medley and the shot of the real life Nash's when ABM won best picture. The wife looking for the camera and then waving. The poor dear was so out of place. I loved it.

    Ummmm.

They're saying Denzel and Halle's awards were given because they "deserve some recognition as black actors for their great body of work."

    Uh huh.

    That's very nice of them.

But, if I'm not mistaken, the best actor and actress award is for their performance in the film they were nominated for - not for the entire body of work? Am I wrong? Isn't it awards given for movies and people for the work they did in the last year.

Frankly, Denzel didn't cut it, IMHO. I don't know about Halle, I didn't see her film, but Denzel certainly didn't put in a better performance than Will Smith or Russell Crowe.

See, I thought the Oscars were given to people because of an exceptional performance, not because it would be a nice thing to do...

Or did I miss a memo?

You're not wrong, but you just have to remember that the Oscars are a "we are stars" night. It's just a way for this lot to lap it all up together for a change. It's like their own little version of the Christmas Office party.

Tom Cruise's speech showed this all up perfectly. "I was speaking to an actor friend of mine and he said, 'what are we doing here?...'" Who cares, Tom?

Will Smith was better than Washington. You're right. It would've made more sense to give the award to him if it was as simple as being a token race nod. But the voters have a past history of not giving their votes to race based movies/performances. That's probably the same reason "The Hurricane" didn't get Washington's award a few years back (not that I thought it deserved anything anyway).

Anyone actually see Training Day? IMO Denzel was way over the top towards the end of the movie.

Denzel's performance in Training Day was no different to the performances of most 'baddies' in film. There was nothing too special about the role or his performance (great actor that he is), IMO

Training Day? The whole movie was over the top.

But I was damn sure Will Smith would get it for Ali. Russell was great, but Will Smith WAS Ali. It was truly the performance of the year, if not the decade, IMO.

Unfortunately for a long time now the Oscars seem to be given to people for there body of work rather than for what they were actually nominated for.
This year Denzel, last year Russell. I mean he was good in Gladiator but was he THAT good?
Ritchie Cunningham over Peter Jackson, come on!
