got caught up in this at the 'buggs w/ drive thru near my work. the lady in front of me paid my total which was around $6.50 or so. i only had to pay $1.85 for whatever the man/woman/genderless fleshmass ordered behind me, so i made out pretty well, all told!

    MEMMY KISSMAS!!!!! *cp hug*

There's something at Starbucks that costs only $1.85? What was it, a cup of water?

I used to go to Starbucks for individual boxes of apple juice, and I think it was somewhere around that price.

That's about the price for a Tall brewed coffee. That's the only thing I buy when I happen to be at Starbucks, maybe sometimes a bakery item.

People only give because it makes them feel good. True story; altruism works of the utility gained by the giver and not for any selfless reasons.

So in short, emotional boners is what they get out of it.

Would the $20 bill I found once in an ATM (right as I was going to use it) count as a pay it forward gesture?

pretty sure studies have been done. And I don't have a problem with it - if a guy gives $10,000 to charity because he feels good or because it's genuinely selfless - who cares? Charity's gained. Boom. Winner winner something dinner.

I think it's an overly simplistic and cynical view to take. Selfishness vs. selfishness is not a dichotomy but a spectrum. People aren't 100% either way and neither are the sum of their actions. "Humans are inherently selfish" is often trotted out as an excuse for the evils of a society and culture that emphasize and celebrate selfishness and greed.

That said (and related to the last sentence), this "pay it forward" thing is a stupid gimmick by a multinational, multi-billion-dollar corporation that wants to look good without losing a goddamned cent.

Can you summarize, or at least point us to the relevant timestamps? I doubt anyone wants to spends a whole half hour just to respond to a post in the Starbucks thread.

It's a really good episode, but I can't do timestamps - I listened to it when it came out. Still, I recommend it but the point is well made in the episode, and you will all subscribe.

Fair enough. I will try to look into it tomorrow? I never subscribe to podcasts, though.

So if the person ahead won't pay can you keep letting people ahead of you until someone does?

Americans have issues with geography, zapdos. Look at nations attending "world series" events in the USA... 1) USA... 2) Well, this is awkward
