I've completely forgotten how to do spoiler tags, so until I can look it up...

I like how Zahn has Thrawn refer to "threats"- plural- in the Unknown Regions. Seems like a nod to the Yuuzhan Vong, something Zahn previously built up a lot in his stories, while also foreshadowing Snoke and his Snoke squad.

    Oh yay I remembered

I apologize, I didn't know that was considered a spoiler as it was released to the public.

Sure, people can go looking for it, but for here, in this thread I'd understand why people might want to be unspoiled on this one.

Though, for myself, that particular titbit does actually help sell the book! Hence why the excerpt was likely released. Plus
    Captain Eil Parck[/spolier].

According to board spoiler policy, it's not a spoiler since it's in an officially-released promotional excerpt.

That said, using spoiler tags is usually a nice courtesy for those who don't want to read those things. It's by no means mandatory, however.

So let's leave it at that. :)

I never read excerpts. Or really, almost never. I think the last one I read was the last X-Wing novel a few years ago.
For the sake of those reading the thread I added tags:

I don't remember Parck...but I looked him up. I remember the Mist Encounter overall story but not the people. Different given name. So...a new name for the NEU?

“Yet you still seek to protect them. Why?”
    “Because they are my people.”

THRAWN! (yes, right now, that's how my brain is functioning)
But seriously, that is so freaking awesome. Thrawn knows what duty is. Thrawn knows what to do even when others shun you.
    Thrawn is amazeballs.

I enjoyed reading from Parck's point-of-view. There was humor mixed in with pure Empire.

    THAT END.

IS IT APRIL YET?! Holy cow this comes out during my school's spring break. I DON'T HAVE TO WORK I CAN READ. I just realized this now.
    *rambles*

That fit PERFECTLY with Mist Encounter[\i]

Where in the timeline does this fit? That is, how many years after ROTS?

    I wonder:
If Thrawn's encounter with Anakin would have happened in the unfinished Vong arc for TCW ?

    Um, folks:

Parck doesn't have a new name. Eli refers to Eli Vanto, a completely different character. The excerpt is from Eli's POV.

I'd guess (but don't know) that Parck is still Voss Parck.

And people wonder why Thrawn is such a popular villain, and Zahn such a popular author. It's because the combination of the two collectively makes people weak at the knees. No one captures Thrawn's tone and pattern of dialogue like Zahn does, and now that we've had a "canonical" voice for him in Rebels, it makes the excerpt even more potent. It also makes me realize just how well cast Lars Mikkelson is as Thrawn; I can read his voice into the excerpt seamlessly.

Interestingly enough, Mikkelson's Thrawn voice was pretty much exactly the voice I had for Thrawn in my head. When I first heard him speak in the Season 3 trailer it was as if it had been taken directly from my imagination.

When the TTT first came out, he was a great counter point to Palpatine and Vader. While many of the EU villains (at the time) were pretty awful in comparison

Regards Rebels I think he's been pretty useless TBH. He steeples his fingers well I guess

Just to CONFIRM what 'jello said in the spoiler tag. We did not rename that character. He remains who he has always been. And yes, the POV of the excerpt is from a new character.

I see right off the bat Zahn held true to his statement at NYCC. Palpatine seems to be much more front and centre here, and that excerpt ends with the promise of more.

Ok, we need Lars and Ian doing a reading of this excerpt at the next Celebration. :) Maybe this is part of those Thrawn-related festivities that were discussed earlier. ;)
