In the film, which I quite liked, we were told about the Republic. But we never saw it, other than when the Sun crush...sorry...Starkiller destroyed several planets.

Does this mean the Republic was destroyed? Was that Coruscant we saw being blown up? Is there no government now?

It was very vague, and I just didn't understand where the Republic fit in between the Resistance and the First Order. Anyone got any theories of information?

Those are all very good questions that I also asked myself first thing after going out of the movie theater. I suppose they will answer them in future movies and through other expanded universe media.

I wonder how come Republic allowed First Order to grow so strong and just ignored the threat it represented. One would assume this fleet they spoke of in the movie could obliterate mere 'remnants' of the empire pretty easily. Sort of reminds me of the situation we are facing right now in real life *ehrm* ISIS *ehrm*.

If you read The Aftermath Novel, it might explain this very question.

The only thing that I can say is that Mon Mothma was talking about cutting the New Republic Military. So The First Order could have risen to power because of that.

Just what I thought about, not sure if that is true or not?

The Senate was in session and they were disputing over trade routes. Unfortunately this amazing scene was left on the cutting room floor.

As far as I recall hearing, Poe mentioned the Hosnian system as being the seat of the Republic's government / the system being destroyed. And we already had reports of a world called Hosnian Prime (a name that would indicate that the system has other worlds of note, which links into the multiple planets being destroyed).

Chandrila, home world of senator and Alliance co-founder Mon Mothma, was the New Republic capital around the time of the Battle of Jakku / Aftermath, shortly (relatively speaking) after the Battle of Endor.

Note to self: see the movie again (and then some more), and get those books (Visual Dictionary, Art of TFA, Incredible Crosssections, etc) delivered already...

You know...a lot of people who wanted PT references (myself included) thought the most logical and likely one to have would be Coruscant.

I hope it's not a big middle finger to the PT to have JJ/Kasdan blow up the planet in this movie so it never has to show up again in future movies.

My presumption was that there are two territories - the Republic and the First Order. The Resistance is an insurgency within First Order space, supported by the Republic.

And they destroyed one planet, its moons and the fleet in orbit - Hosnian Prime.

I don't think it was Coruscant, though I can see why others would. Just a similar looking world, like Tatooine and Jakku.

Yes the Republic was definitely the elephant in the room in this film. The First Order has become powerful and dangerous enough to create possibly the most lethal superweapon in history, and the Republic has apparently sat on its collective behind and allowed this to happen. This is basically the same as letting North Korea get hold of ICBMs, except with the biggest nuke ever made strapped to one end.

I guess the only conclusion is simply that the Republic really was not capable of doing anything about the First Order. In which case, why has the FO been holding back until now? Why is there no hot war between them? If the Republic is so weak, then why not simply crush it? Is the Republic somehow IN LEAGUE with the First Order? Tin foil hat time.

Also, Leia is clearly in with the Resistance instead of helping to run the show in the Republic. That's also a curiosity.

I think it had something to do with tragedy with Luke's academy, Ben's betrayal and her break up with Han.

Why start a hot war when you're building your super weapon?

Hosnian Prime becoming the capital of the Republic makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, considering that Coruscant had been the seat of the Galaxy for thousands of years.

Destroying the capital wouldn't have made the Republic crumble though? So has the First Order won?

Horrendous storytelling if that's the case.
