Emily Dow Partridge Smith. Mostly because she was married to both Joseph Smith AND Brigham Young. But she's not the only wife who made a successful transition to the new leadership after Smith's assassination.

i thought it was "bring 'um" young who had the underage wives. i didnt know j. smith did that too. then again, were they underage at the time? what was the age of consent in pre-civil war US?

I don't there really was any except "as long as she's hit puberty." 14 and 16 were plenty old enough for most people of the time, not just polygamists. Hell, it's old enough for a ton of jurisdictions today.

I drove north along the Mississippi last Spring from St. Louis to the Quad Cities, and Nauvoo, IL was one of the most interesting stops. I highly recommend it. I mean, I wouldn't intentionally go there, but if you ever get lost and end up there by accident, then definitely, yes.
