I have a question about the long story: do the letters have to be sent/ received? I was thinking of expanding my story “Letters Across Hyperspace” in which Ezra and Sabine are writing letters to each other during the time they’re apart after the Rebels finale, but I didn’t know if that met the criteria, since they don’t communicate with each other.

Viari answered that very question right up here: :)

I am considering a similar "unsent letters" scenario myself, so I'm glad of this as well. :)

Kind of building off @Thumper09's question, and this is very pedantic and also completely theoretical at this point, but how literally are we taking 'speaking'? :p Like, if Character A sings a song to Character B, is that allowed? Or if they write them a note or something that is directly addressing them but not face-to-face talking? I hope that makes sense. Thanks!

None of my characters are secretive (since I'm not, so why should any of them be) so I might have to use the substitute prompt for this week. We'll just have to wait and see, won't we? ;)

Hi guys! I wanted to address your questions first so they don't get lost in the mix, and then a couple other comments/thread housekeeping...

So my intent here was that there would be no direct speech between the two characters at all, but I realize the way I worded it leaves some wiggle room, so I'm going to say that as long as the secret-keeping character does not admit their secret through direct speech to the other character (with one caveat in my reply to amidalachick below), then you can interpret the prompt how you wish. :)

Lol, not pedantic at all! For our purposes, singing would be considered direct speech, as would anything involving their voice (like a prerecorded voice message or hologram, etc.). Writing a note is a bit of a gray area - technically speaking, it isn't direct vocalized speech, but if it's directly addressed to the other character, then it functions much the same, so I'm going to say that a note directly addressed to the other character is not allowed, but other types of notation/writing, including notes written to characters who are not the one on the receiving end of the secret, are allowed.

I had a request to link my own example of this sort of story here in the thread, so here it is: A Not-So-Private Conversation. The prompt is a little different from this year's, but the gist is the same. Hopefully this helps give an idea of how you might work with (or around) the direct speech limitation! ;)

That's right, the letters do not have to be sent or received. As long as at least two characters are writing to one another, even if the letters are deleted/crumpled up/shoved in a drawer, that counts for the prompt! :)

I love this sort of scenario in fiction. [face_batting]

It was a great prompt, and I had so much fun writing for it, and I also can't wait to see how it gets interpreted anew! :D

Fantastic! Your thread is now in the index! [face_dancing]

It's been a crazy day here, so if I've missed replying to a question, please don't hesitate to remind me! :p There's still a little more than five hours left until the deadline for Week 1 - anyone else have a story to share? [face_batting]

I do: here at the last minute, I called upon my rusted college era skills for writing up against the wall. And somehow, I got that story done--with a break to dish out canned treat for my cats, because that was the only way Rachel Cat was getting off the keyboard.

And the link: "My Life in the Forest".

Week 2 Substitute prompt posted. Same fandom, different characters, including some canon ones.

Since I don't title or index my entries, here's the link to the thread:

Survival of the fittest (multi-fandom) Kessel Run Challenge 2024

Not sure if all 12 entries will be within the same fandom, it just depends on the prompts.;)

That's okay, Elli, take your time! Good luck with your plot bunny and this week's prompt as well! [:D]

Yay, so glad you made it in before the deadline! I've added your thread to the index. ;)

@Force of Light - For future reference, in order to post a link directly to your latest entry, there's a number listed in the bottom right corner of your post, next to the "Like" option (for example, this post's number is #111), and if you click that number, a screen will pop up with a URL unique to that post. You can then copy/paste that link here when you update with a new challenge response. If you're on mobile, the permalink might not show up in portrait mode, but if you switch orientation to landscape, you should see it. I hope that helps! :)

Okay so just a clarification. The character reveals a secret to another without talking directly to them? But can they be talking to another character?

Yep! There's nothing in the prompt precluding the secret-keeper from talking to anyone else directly. ;)

Okay, tackled the whole thing differently now but possibly good to know for others.
My second entry Secrets featuring Tia Vandel from the first entry (might make this entire challenge about her and her brother).

Thanks for the tip, since I have a hard enough time trying to figure out which fandom fits the prompt the best than having to add a title to it as well.

I have a question regarding the nature of the secret. Does it have to be information deliberately kept from a character or can they discover something that they didn’t know yet (that was not deliberately hidden from them). Specifically, my scenario involves a character indirectly finding out that another character has died.

The secret doesn't have to be one that is specifically kept from the person discovering it; it only has to be a secret on the part of the person keeping it. To use your example, character B finding out that someone has died wouldn't count unless character A had been actively trying to keep it a secret. (Whether the secret-keeper/character A is still trying to keep it a secret or has since decided to reveal all is up to you!) I hope that helps!

@Raissa Baiard - I realized after posting my last answer that my wording might have been a bit too limiting. That's my bad; I was rushing to answer your question before I left to pick up my youngest from school and didn't think things through as completely as I could have. So I'd like to amend my previous answer to say that the secret in question doesn't have to belong to the character revealing it - it simply has to be someone's secret.

So now that I've confused the matter even more, I'll try to break down the essential components of the prompt for everyone's benefit :p:
    • Character A admits a secret to Character B. The secret does not have to be Character A's secret.
    • Character A cannot directly speak with Character B and/or directly address Character B. Character A can speak directly with and/or directly address any character besides Character B.
    • Character B can speak directly to Character A.
    • Indirect means of communication are allowed.

I hope that clears it up a little. The goal here is to inspire creativity by setting up simple and reasonable limitations that can be approached in multiple different ways, so be creative and have fun with it! And if you have questions, let me know!

One more question: Character A has to admit the secret to Character? Would this preclude a situation where Character B found something belonging to Character A that revealed a secret?
