"Bet you weren't ready for that!": the 70s Space Music Challenge

It was the 70s. It was 1977 in particular: the year that the movie that was still known only as Star Wars hit the cinemas, and space opera was not to be the same again. But the music of the era was already plenty "space"--and had been for more than a few years--to provide just the right soundtrack as you drove into the drive-in lot to watch Luke Skywalker (the farmboy who didn't know anything) and Han Solo (this smuggler in tight pants who thinks he knows everything) don their stormtrooper disguises to rescue the princess! Only to find that they need her help to accomplish that!

Space: it's more than a just a place. It's a state of mind. It's the music playing at a roller rink whilst you dream of fabulous worlds and adventures over a Diet Tab. While the music played, that was the closest you could be to getting there yourself.

    ------------

With all that said: Welcome to "Bet you weren't ready for that!": The 70s Space Music Challenge

As indicated above, I am taking a broad interpretation of what "space music" is, so not all of the five songs I have chosen directly reference outer space. (Though a few certainly do!) It's all about the ambience. If it sounds like it could be on that late midnight drive-in soundtrack, it is in. Interestingly enough, none of my chosen songs actually came out in the exact year 1977: but they are all of that era, and I'm sure would have still been playing, on the radio, and on personal LPs.

The rules are quite simple: pick a number, and get a song. Stay within the TOS, and have a ball.

@Gabri_Jade : What the heck, indeed. You have received "Bohemian Rhapsody" (1975) by Queen.

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?

    The classic video:

@ViariSkywalker : You have received "Starman" (1972) by David Bowie.

That wasn't no DJ, that was hazy cosmic jive...

[Apparently, the longer boats of the title are....spaceships?]

Hold on to the shore, they'll be taking the key from the door

@Mira_Jade : You certainly may! You have received "Space Cowboy" (1969) by Steve Miller Band.

Yes, I know: it came out in 1969. January 1969 at that. But that's close enough to the 70s for my purposes. Besides, it gave this challenge its title, so I had to.

I'm a space cowboy, bet you weren't ready for that

    Romantic Tropes

There isn't a reader or author amongst us who doesn't adore romantic tropes [face_laugh]

I've selected 5 very common, fun ones. Pick a number from 1-5 and write a fic of any length featuring original characters, established characters or one each. :)

    1. Childhood Sweethearts

    2. Second chance
[This one could involve a couple meeting again after a long absence like in Jane Austen's Persuasion or after a misunderstanding a reconciliation becomes possible.]

    3. Forced proximity
[This is where two persons who are either in denial about their feelings or not aware yet have to share accommodations or spend extended time together in close proximity.]

    4. Fake Dating
[I love this one! A situation arises where the two of them have to pretend to date and then realize hey, we're not actually pretending as much as we thought.] [face_mischief]

    5. Fairytale retelling
[Any spin on a fairy tale: Cinderella; Sleeping Beauty; Rapunzel, etc.]

Link to a site explaining these kinds of tropes in detail:

I recently updated my little list of mini-games that still have prompts for the taking, so here it is if anyone needs a little something to boost the muse. I skimmed through the thread to see if any prompts were taken that hadn't been added to the relevant challenge index; please let me know if I missed anything.

Look at you go! [face_dancing] This was such an awesome blast from the past, and fantastic inspiration for all of us who have outstanding prompts yet teasing our muses. [face_mischief] I'm adding this to the index now.

This is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. :D

    Sure, here you go:
“I suppose if we couldn’t laugh at things that don’t make sense, we couldn’t react to a lot of life.” (from this comic) (the previous ones I linked to are behind a paywall now, sorry) The exact quote doesn't have to be in the story if you don't want-- it's meant more to be the inspiration. :)

@Chyntuck , I appreciate the boost! :) This was the last available prompt, so this challenge is full now. Though I do have other quotes I collected as candidates if anyone wants them. :p

I've got a character I've already compared to Calvin, so I'm sorely tempted to take one of those bonus prompts, but I'd like to finish my current challenges first.
